Located about 20 km (12.4 mi) outside of Twizel, the Greta Track is one of the most underrated day walks in New Zealand. On a clear day, you'll get 360° views over Lake Ohau, the surrounding Southern Alps, and the Mackenzie Country. Despite its relatively long length, the terrain and landscape changes keep the walk exciting the whole way.

Lake Ohau Formed by glacial movements in eons past, Lake Ohau is found in the Mackenzie Basin area on the country's South Island. It's one of three similar lakes that run parallel to one another in a north-south direction, and they receive their flow of water from the Hopkins and Dobson Rivers which begin their journey in the Southern Alps.

The Scenic Drive to Lake Ohau. My favourite part of our trip to Lake Ohau was the scenic drive to get there. We visited in October (spring time) and it had recently snowed a lot, so the hills and mountains surrounding the road to Lake Ohau were covered in snow. It was an awesome drive - maybe not so breathtaking without a good helping of snow.

In 1951 Sir Harry Wigley purchased and transported these buildings from Lake Pukaki. Lake Ohau Lodge was opened in time for the summer season with thirty bedrooms, a dining room and lounge with an impressive local stone fire place, which all remain part of the Lodge today. Riding, fishing, tramping and other excursions were available on request.

What a magnificent day. I started out driving along Lake Ohau to reach the start of the trail near Greta Lodge. The lake itself looked stunning..
